Size: Mature Koi can grow to 60cm and are know to get up to 90cm or more. We sell Koi starting from 5cm in size. Some people think that buying Koi at this size and leaving them in a small pond means they won't outgrow their environment. This is not the case. If Koi start to get bigger and feel too crowded in their pond they will start to jump. Koi need at least 1000 litres of water to be happy. In perfect conditions, Koi can grow 20cm in a year.
Distribution: Originate from Japan.
Reproduction: Koi generally spawn in early summer. During this time you will notice the Male's chasing the Female's. The Male Koi will ram into the female's to encourage them to deposit the eggs. It's a good idea to have a lot of aquatic plants in your pond if you wish for the eggs to hatch and grow. The more places for the eggs to hide the better the chances of their survival, otherwise the Koi will eat any eggs. It can take one to two weeks for the eggs to hatch. If you find the Male Koi are being too rough and bullying the Female's it may be a good idea to remove the female's and place them in a separate pond.
Feeding: During Summer feed Koi a quality High Protein Food. You can feed them every day or every second day. Koi will also eat any Algae that forms in the pond, along with any bugs. In winter their metabolism slows right down and any food given to them can sit undigested. You can cut right back on the feeding during this time.
Life Expectancy: 30-60 years.
