Scientific Name: Schefflera arboricola or Schefflera actinophylla
S.arboricola and S.actinophylla are two different plants but have similar qualities and both go by the common name of Dwarf Umbrella Tree. Also referred to a Parasol Plant or Octopus Tree.
The S.arboricola is native to Taiwan and Hainan, where as the S.actinophylla is native to tropical rain forests in Australia, New Guinea and Java.
The most common ways of being able to tell them apart is with their height, the length of their leaves and the yellow pattern they may get on their leaves. For the height and length of the plant you would need them both to be fully matured. The pattern of the yellow colouring isn't that great of an example because you would need to wait for the leaves to go yellow, that is if they do.
The S.actinophylla can get to 12m in height and the S.arboricola 4.5m. They will only get to these heights if you are growing them outside in the ground. If you are they will need to be in a shaded area where they won't get direct sunlight. These plants are perfect for indoors but will only reach a height of about 1.2 - 2.4 metres. The low light levels from inside will only effect their growth rate.
